    Q:
How to remove, clean, and reinstall when preparing an engine block for reassembly on Acura Integra? Posted by Customer
    A:
On SOHC engines, remove the main bearing cap bridge, while for DOHC VTEC engines, both the caps and bridge need to be removed. In the case of DOHC non-VTEC engines, simply separate the caps from the engine block and then detach the bearing inserts from both the caps and the block. Tag the bearings to indicate their original cylinder and whether they were in the cap or the block, then set them aside. For DOHC VTEC engines, unbolt and remove the oil jets from the block, ensuring the spout holes are clear for a 0.040-inch drill to fit. Test the check ball's movement and spring pressure, replacing the oil jet if it fails any tests. Use a gasket scraper to eliminate all gasket material from the engine block without damaging the sealing surfaces. Remove all covers and threaded oil gallery plugs, which may require drilling out and retapping if they are too tight, and use new plugs upon reassembly. Core plugs should be removed by knocking one side into the block and pulling them out with pliers. If the engine is very dirty, take it to an automotive machine shop for cleaning. After cleaning, ensure all oil holes and galleries are flushed and dried thoroughly, using rust preventive oil on machined surfaces. If the block is not excessively dirty, hot soapy water and a stiff brush can suffice for cleaning, ensuring all oil holes and galleries are thoroughly cleaned and dried. Clean the threaded holes in the block with the proper size tap to remove any debris and restore damaged threads, using compressed air to clear out any residue. Reinstall the main bearing caps and tighten the bolts finger tight. Coat the sealing surfaces of new core plugs with a hard-setting sealant before installing them straight into the engine block, ensuring they are seated properly to prevent leakage. Apply a non-hardening sealant to the new oil gallery plugs and securely thread them into the block. If reassembly is not immediate, cover the engine with a large plastic trash bag to keep it clean.

    Q:
How should the cylinder bores be assessed for the 1999 Acura Integra? Posted by Customer
    A:
Check the cylinder bores for scuffing and scoring, and assess the cylinders for taper and out-of-round conditions by measuring the diameter at the top, center, and bottom of each cylinder bore, both parallel and perpendicular to the crankshaft axis.
