To remove the camshaft from the front cylinder head, first drain the engine coolant and take off the left and right engine compartment covers. Next, remove the valve covers and the timing belt, followed by the rocker arms and shafts as an assembly. Before proceeding, check the camshaft endplay. Then, take off the camshaft sprockets. If removing from the front cylinder head, also remove the battery and battery tray, and detach the upper radiator hose from the coolant passage. For the rear cylinder head, detach the brake lines from the master cylinder. Remove the EGR valve to access the camshaft retainer plate, then take off the retainer plate and carefully slide the camshaft out of the cylinder head, ensuring not to damage the lobes or journals. For inspection, track the location of components while removing the rocker arms and springs from the rocker shafts, bolting the bare rocker shafts to the cylinder head and tightening them to the specified torque. Mount a dial indicator to measure the camshaft's movement; if excessive endplay is detected, replace the retainer plate and check again, replacing the camshaft if necessary. Measure the journal diameters and lobe heights, checking for wear or damage. During installation, replace the camshaft oil seal, removing the old seal and lubricating the new one before installing it squarely. Clean the camshaft and lubricate the journals and lobes before carefully installing it into the cylinder head. Install a new O-ring on the camshaft retainer plate, secure it, and follow the reverse order of removal for reassembly. If coolant was drained, refill the cooling system, and if brake lines were detached, bleed the brake system. Finally, run the engine to check for oil leaks at the camshaft seals, allowing it to operate at low speed for five minutes to ensure proper function and to check for any tappet noise, which may indicate issues with the lost motion assemblies.
