To remove all rocker arm components, it is necessary to first take out the rocker arm shafts, which is challenging with the cylinder head still installed in the vehicle; thus, it is advisable to remove the cylinder head beforehand. Begin by taking off the cylinder head covers and the timing belt, sprockets, and inner covers. Next, remove the distributor. Loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts in 1/3-turn increments until they can be removed by hand, then take off the bearing cap oil pipe and cap assemblies, followed by the rear camshaft sealing plug. Note the position of the sprocket locating dowel pin for reassembly and gently lift out the camshaft, ensuring it remains level. Remove the oil seal from the end of the camshaft and mark the bearing caps and oil pipes to indicate their original positions. Proceed to remove the rocker arm guide plates and then lift out the rocker arms, keeping them separate for reinstallation. Loosen the exhaust rocker arm locknuts and back off the adjustment screws to lift out the pushrods, labeling their positions for reinstallation. Remove the end caps and slide the exhaust rocker arm shaft out, catching the wave washers as the shaft is removed. If the shaft is stuck, use a long bolt as a handle. Remove the spring clips and lift out the exhaust rocker arms, storing them in order. Take out the lash adjusters and store them organized for reinstallation. For inspection, roll the pushrods on a piece of glass to check for bends, visually inspect the rocker arms for wear and damage, and check the lash adjusters for wear. For installation, pour engine oil into the lash adjuster holes and insert them back into their original locations without rotating them. If any lash adjusters are suspected to be faulty, have them inspected. Apply moly-base grease or engine assembly lube to all moving parts, then install the exhaust rocker arms, wave washers, and shafts in their original locations, followed by the upper rocker arms and pushrods. Lubricate the lips of a new camshaft oil seal with engine oil and install it, ensuring the spring side faces inward, then install the rear camshaft sealing plug. Set the camshaft in place, ensuring the seal is correctly positioned, and apply a thin coat of non-hardening sealant to the bearing cap-to-cylinder head mating surfaces before installing the bearing cap and oil pipe assemblies. Tighten the bearing cap bolts in 1/3-turn increments until the specified torque is reached, following the recommended sequence. Apply grease or lube to the camshaft lobes, bearing journals, and gear thrust faces, then install the other camshaft similarly. Reinstall the timing belt, covers, and sprockets, and with the engine at Top Dead Center for the number one cylinder, adjust the valves for cylinders one, two, and four. After turning the crankshaft one full turn, adjust the valves for cylinders three, five, and six. Reinstall the remaining components in reverse order, remove the spark plugs, crank the engine, and check for compression at each cylinder. If any cylinder lacks compression, disassembly may be necessary to check for faulty lash adjusters. Finally, run the engine and check for leaks and proper operation.
