Always start checking them whenever new spark plugs are installed so as to keep the spark plug wires in good condition. In doing this, watch the cables with naked eyes while the car's engine is running inside a dark and ventilated garage to see if there are any sparks produced by wire breaks or arcing. Check first one wire at a time to avoid confusing them ensuring that each is numbered or labeled correctly. Disconnect each cable carefully from the spark plugs and check inside the boot for corrosion. Then fix wire properly on the plug starting with crimping carefully metal connector when it has any loose fits. Wipe whole length of wire totally clean without bending it much as you look for damages. Again disconnect this wire from distributor by pulling rubber boot on it, look for corrosion and make sure it fits securely before attaching again. Examine all other spark plug wires that have connections both at the distributor and at their corresponding spark plugs mainly to ensure they are fitted well enough thus functioning right. In case replacement needs be done find out which set will fit your engine model, putting in place new wires following one by one firing order system rule that always apply in such circumstances. Look for external damage and internal problems like cracks, carbon tracks and worn contacts on a distributor cap and replace if necessary. Remove distributor rotor after loosing it to see whether there are any cracks or carbon tracks which need replacement in such conditions as well as damaged ones too. Consider changing of cap and rotor either when you fit new spark plug wires or measure resistance between them together with cap itself separately while carrying out an insulation test of cap using a megger impedance tester box between electrodes per pin during assembly of a new distributor capecially when replacing the unit.
