Remove the crankshaft pulley, disconnect the exhaust system, and support the transaxle with a jack.

All external components must be removed first for transfer to the replacement engine, including the alternator and brackets, power steering pump and brackets, emissions control components, distributor, spark plug wires and plugs, thermostat and housing cover, water pump bypass pipe, fuel injection components, intake/exhaust manifolds, oil filter, engine mounts, and clutch and flywheel or driveplate.

If the cylinders are in good condition and within limits, and if proper piston-to-cylinder clearances can be maintained, rebore is unnecessary, and honing will suffice.

Remove all covers and threaded oil gallery plugs, which may require drilling out and retapping if they are too tight. Use new plugs upon reassembly.

An engine hoist or A-frame is necessary, and it should be rated to exceed the combined weight of the engine/transaxle and its accessories.

The primary consideration is the condition of the engine block.

To save time and avoid problems, follow this general order for reassembly: 1. Piston/connecting rod assemblies for various engine models 2. Crankshaft and main bearings 3.
