Lower the assembly to the ground, support it with wood blocks, and remove the clutch and flywheel or driveplate before mounting the engine on a stand. Then, separate the transaxle from the engine.

Camshaft(s) and rocker arm assembly 10. Water pump 11. Timing belt and sprockets 12. Intake and exhaust manifolds 13. Timing belt covers 14. Valve cover 15. Flywheel/driveplate.

Reinstall the main bearing caps and tighten the bolts finger tight.

A short block includes an engine block with an installed crankshaft and piston/connecting rod assemblies, along with new bearings and correct clearances, allowing for easy attachment of existing components with minimal machine work.

All external components must be removed first for transfer to the replacement engine, including the alternator and brackets, power steering pump and brackets, emissions control components, distributor, spark plug wires and plugs, thermostat and housing cover, water pump bypass pipe, fuel injection components, intake/exhaust manifolds, oil filter, engine mounts, and clutch and flywheel or driveplate.

Use a precision straightedge and feeler gauge to check the block deck for distortions by laying the straightedge diagonally across the block from end to end.
