Because of wear of the wheel seals, oil leaks occur frequently and, while the replacement of these seals often requires removal of the transaxle from the vehicle, the repair is usually simple. At either end of the transaxle, where the driveaxles are attached, there are wheel seals. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. If the seal is leaking, lubricant will be found on the sides of the transaxle, below the seals. First off remove the driveaxes and with a screwdriver or prybar gently begin to work the oil from the transaxle bore to get the seal out. These tools will work if the seal can be removed, but if it cannot, a special seal removal tool will be needed, available at auto parts stores. The new seal may be installed using a seal driver or a large deep socket that is slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the seal removed as a drift and driven squarely into the bore until the pump indicates it is completely seated. Before re-installing the driveaxle(s), apply transaxle lubricant to the lip of the seal and take care not to damage the lip of the new seal.
