For 2006 and earlier models, begin by placing the shift lever in NEUTRAL and disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Raise the vehicle securely on jackstands, then detach the transmission range switch electrical connector from its mounting bracket and disconnect it. Next, detach the wiring harness for the transmission range switch from the transaxle by removing a bolt and squeezing the locator pins to push the clip out. Remove the transmission range switch cover bolts and the cover, followed by the mounting bolts for the switch itself. Ensure the switch is in the Neutral position before installation, aligning it with the stationary Neutral index mark, and confirm the control shaft is also in Neutral. The installation process is the reverse of removal, ensuring the mounting bolts are tightened securely without moving the switch. After installation, turn the ignition to ON, move the shift lever through all gears, and verify synchronization with the gear position indicator, ensuring the engine does not start in any gear other than Park or Neutral, and that back-up lights activate in Reverse. If any criteria are not met, readjust the transmission range switch. For 2007 and later models, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, remove the battery and tray, and take out the air intake duct and filter housing. Remove the shift cable bracket nuts, spring clip/washer, and control pin, then separate the shift cable from the control lever. Inspect the bushing in the shift cable end, disconnect the electrical connector from the transmission range switch, and remove the control lever components. Loosen and remove the locknut and washer from the control shaft, then take out the switch mounting bolts and the switch. Before installing the new switch, set it in the NEUTRAL position, ensuring alignment with the control shaft. Install a new lock washer and locknut, tightening it to the specified torque while holding the shaft. Finally, bend the lock tabs of the new lock washer, and complete the installation in reverse order, applying moly grease to the shift cable bushing.
