- Q: How to Rebuild a CV Joint and CV Boot?A: If the CV joints are worn, indicating the need for an overhaul due to torn boots. Complete rebuilt driveaxles are available on an exchange basis, which can save much time and effort. If you decide to rebuild a CV joint, check the cost and availability of parts before disassembling the driveaxle. Remove the driveaxle from the vehicle. Mount the driveaxle in a vise with jaws lined with wood or rags to avoid damage. For the inner CV joint and boot, cut off both boot clamps and slide the boot towards the center of the driveaxle. Mark or paint alignment marks on the outer race and the tri-pot bearing assembly so they can be returned to their original positions and then slide the outer race off the tri-pot bearing assembly. Remove the snap ring from the end of the axleshaft and mark the relationship of the tri-pot bearing assembly to the axleshaft. Secure the bearing rollers with tape and remove the tri-pot bearing assembly from the axleshaft using a brass drift and hammer. Remove the stop ring, discard the old boot, clean the old grease from the components, and inspect for wear. For reassembly, wrap the splines of the axleshaft with tape to protect the new boot, slide the boot on, align match marks, and tap the tri-pot assembly back onto the axleshaft. Apply CV joint grease to hold needle bearings, pack the outer race with grease, seat the boot in its grooves, adjust driveaxle length, equalize boot pressure using a blunt screwdriver, install and tighten new boot clamps, and finally, install the driveaxle assembly. For the outer CV joint and boot, remove the inner CV joint from the driveaxle, disassemble it, and if the driveaxle has a dynamic damper, mark its position and remove. Cut the boot clamps and slide the boot off. Clean and inspect the inner and outer CV joints. If there's any damage, replace the necessary parts. For reassembly, slide the new outer boot onto the axleshaft, add grease, install the new clamps, place the dynamic damper if present, clean and reassemble the inner CV joint, and finally, install the driveaxle.
